With FxPro's ZAR account, your risk amount goes in as rand and stays as rand. No bank conversion on deposit: a R50,000 transfer arrives as R50,000. With a USD account funded from ZAR, your bank takes 1–3% on every transfer β€” R500–R1,500 lost before you place a single trade.

How to use this calculator

01

Enter your ZAR balance

Gold is priced in USD, but your account is in Rand. Enter your balance in ZAR β€” the calculator fetches the live USD/ZAR rate from the ECB and handles the conversion automatically. No manual maths required.
02

Set your risk percentage

South African traders often use 1–2% per trade as a guide. At 1%, a R100,000 account risks R1,000 per trade. The calculator shows this in Rand so you see the actual amount, not just a percentage.
03

Enter your stop-loss in pips

Gold pips are $0.01 moves. A 50-pip stop is a R0.50 move in gold price β€” for example, entry at 2,300.00 and stop at 2,299.50. Wider stops reduce lot size; tighter stops allow larger positions for the same rand risk.
04

Read your position size in lots and Rand

The result shows your lot size, your risk in Rand, pip value in ZAR at the live rate, and a full R:R table at 1:1 through 1:3 targets. The streak simulator shows what happens to your ZAR balance over 10 consecutive losing trades.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a gold position size with a ZAR account?

Convert your ZAR risk amount to USD using the live rate, then divide by (stop-loss pips Γ— $1.00 per lot). Example: R10,000 risk at R18.50/$ = $540. With a 50-pip stop: $540 Γ· (50 Γ— $1.00) = 10.8 lots. This calculator does all of that automatically using ECB live rates.

What is the pip value of gold in South African Rand?

One pip on XAU/USD is $0.01 per ounce. For a standard lot (100 oz), pip value is $1.00. At R18.50/$, that is R18.50 per pip per lot. If USD/ZAR moves, your pip value in Rand changes β€” this is why live rates matter. The calculator updates pip value in real time.

Does the Rand and gold price move together?

Often yes β€” gold and the Rand have a positive correlation because South Africa is a major gold producer. When risk-off sentiment hits global markets, gold rises and the Rand weakens simultaneously. This means your ZAR account loses purchasing power in USD terms just as gold prices move, which amplifies both gains and losses. Always size positions with the current exchange rate, not a fixed assumption.

What leverage do FSCA-regulated brokers offer on gold?

FSCA-licensed brokers typically offer 1:100 to 1:500 leverage on XAU/USD for retail clients. At 1:200 leverage, a standard lot ($230,000 notional) requires roughly $1,150 margin β€” about R21,000 at current rates. Higher leverage means more positions are possible but does not change your risk per trade if you size correctly using stop-loss.

How many standard lots of gold can I trade with R50,000?

It depends on your risk tolerance and stop-loss size, not on your full balance. At 1% risk (R500) and a 25-pip stop, your position size is R500 Γ· (25 Γ— R18.50) = 1.08 lots. With a 50-pip stop the same R500 risk gives 0.54 lots. Margin requirement is separate β€” at 1:200 you can technically open much larger positions, but risk management dictates you should not.

Is gold trading taxable in South Africa?

Yes. Profits from CFD gold trading are generally subject to income tax in South Africa, not CGT, because SARS treats frequent CFD trading as revenue in nature. Keep records of every trade β€” entry price, exit price, lot size, and Rand equivalent at the time. Consult a tax practitioner familiar with SARS guidance on forex and CFD income for your specific situation.

What time of day is best for gold trading in South Africa?

Gold's highest volume and tightest spreads occur during the overlap of London and New York sessions: 15:00–20:00 SAST (UTC+2). Major US economic releases (Non-Farm Payrolls, CPI, Fed decisions) hit at 14:30 or 20:00 SAST and frequently cause 200+ pip moves in gold. The Asian session (03:00–10:00 SAST) is quieter with wider spreads β€” suitable for range strategies but not momentum.
